Fat Dogs and French Estates, Part 3 Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from PalliNurse -- Would like even more from this author. : Beth continues her tale of adventures of home ownership and remodeling in France and becoming part of the community. Her writing style allows the reader to feel "along for the ride" and to readily picture the surroundings, conversations and scenes as they unfold. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Carola Muller -- A wonderful third instalment. : With her third book in the "Fat Dogs and French Estates" Beth Haslam's certainly achieved a Hat Trick. After having finally found their dream estate in France, hopes that renovations would be done in a reasonable amount of time ar soon dashed. Beth and her lovable , if sometimes grumpy husband, along with their two adorable pooches have to face an array of obstacles . From vermin infestation to having to deal with a team of most eccentric workmen, the book will make you laugh and smile page after page. Beth has a gift describing with humour, love of nature and a sweet belief in the good of all , her surroundings and fellow men. I really can't imagine anyone not just loving this delightful memoir. The book can be read as a stand alone, but I recommend to also read her first two books in the series. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jennifer H -- Excellent third book : This is the third book in the series and I can confidently say the standard just gets better and better! I enjoyed this third book very much. It deals with the renovation of the wonderful old house they bought in France in a very entertaining and amusing manner. This author has an endearing 'warts and all' manner of recounting their adventures with the renovation of the estate and dealing with the mountains of paperwork necessary in running it. Her description of the wildlife they are privileged to have on the estate is fascinating to say the least. I am sure her 'grouchy' husband will be horrified by this but I grew quite fond of him in this volume of her memoirs. Well written and a joy to read. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from fabulouschrissie -- More Fat Dogs and French Adventures : Beth and Jack have found their dream estate, but unfortunately it's not the easy renovation free home they were expecting. Aided by some marvelous contractors, they begin the job of turning it into their dream home. It's not the simplest of tasks... ( Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Laurie -- Not a easy task at times but Beth has you laughing at ... : Absolutely Charming! Beth and Jack have found their dream home and land in France and proceed to set out what their basic needs will be. They soon find out that there is nothing basic about it. Through much hilarity they set about trying to assemble a group of artisans o do the work needed. The group they assemble is nothing short of eccentric. With everyone in place they set out to discover their many acres of forest with their two dogs, Sam and Biff. Not a easy task at times but Beth has you laughing at their folly's. I can't wait for the next installment of Fat Dogs and French Estates! ( Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2016 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Zuri -- The pains of renovation! : As with Beth's other "Fat Dogs", etc, I enjoyed Part 3 as well. Beth makes me feel as if she's a good friend, and liking the author is always a good thing! Like many other memoirs along the lines of "we bought a run-down property in France ..." this is also about the endless battles with French handymen and French bureaucracy, plus a few linguistic misunderstandings. However, it's not a 5-star book, because the intricate explanations of what was or should be done to various parts of the rambling structures they are renovating do become tedious. While Beth Haslam has a clear idea in her head of the layout of their "compound", it's not easy at all for the reader to also see a clear picture. I am looking forward to Part 4, but I sincerely hope the painful renovation will be then be over and done with! (However, is it ever? In France?) - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jan Butterfield -- Enjoyable Read : Another one in the series, and Beth still has plenty to say about taking on the challenges of living part-time in a foreign country. We learn about the difficulties of managing a construction project in not-your-first-language, the joys of being stewards of a large piece of property teaming with wild-life, and the fun and sorrows of dog ownership. I like that Beth can tell stories about people with whom she comes in contact without disparaging them or being condescending, even when sharing their foibles and voicing her annoyance. Hoping for a Part 4 ( Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2016 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Patti Saint-Marie Wilson -- c'est manifique! : Beth has once again managed to time travel us to when she and her lovely husband Jack were remodeling their second home in France. What makes her memoirs stand out from similar stories is the way she colorfully writes about each person or animal. I laughed, I cried, and I wanted to ring the "carpenter's" neck. My husband was a master carpenter for over 30 years before retiring. Reading the many mistakes of Bob's work made me cringe. I fell in love with Nathan, their endearing groundskeeper. I am ready to pack my bags, once they get rid of the snakes, and live real time the beautiful oasis Beth and Jack have created. Thank you Beth for sharing your wonderful and entertaining life with us. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Glynis Perfect -- It only gets better... : As my title says things can only get better well part 3 takes us on a wonderfully exciting journey as our intrepid travellers one very ebullient lady our author Beth Halam her sometimes grumpy but mostly very clever and practical husband Jack and two very lovable and adaptable mutts make their return journey to their second home in the South of France to face and supervise the daunting task of renovating the main house. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lally -- Wonderfully funny, a really enjoyable read! : Another rattling good read in this super series. Beth, Jack and their two canine companions have finally found their perfect Domaine in southern France, all it requires is a bit of TLC and a little DIY and they can begin to live the dream! But all does not go according to plan, it soon becomes evident that the various buildings all need fairly extensive renovation work to make them safe and habitable. Ever the optimists the couple decide to hire a group of 'artisans' to help with the work. This motley crew turn out to be lovable eccentrics who often hinder rather than help the progress of restoration. When it comes to describing these colourful characters Beth has a keen eye and a wonderful turn of phrase which, when combined with her warm and gentle sense of humour, makes this book a fun and very enjoyable read. I can't finish this review without mentioning dear old Doris, a neighbour in England, who had me giggling hysterically ... I won't give you a spoiler, you'll just have to read this book for yourself to see what I mean, but what a wonderful woman, I wish she was my neighbour! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Average Reader -- Absolutely loved this book : Absolutely loved this book. Tried to read slowly to make it last and savour it a bit longer. Along with other fans of Beth Haslam's books, I couldn't wait for this, the third book in the series. In Fat Dogs & French Estates Books 1 & 2 Beth takes us on the journey throughout France while her and her husband Jack look for a suitable domaine to purchase. In this book, they've found the near perfect domaine of Le Palizac and although the land and forests on the domaine are exactly what they wanted, the properties in situ need a lot of rescuing, renovating and tender loving care to make them safe and habitable. They are inhabited by all manner of creature from the loir to various kinds of harmless snakes much to Beth's horror who is frequently scared witless by them all. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Charlotte -- Fantastique! : I find this Fat Dog series hugely entertaining, and in my opinion, each book is even better than the last as we trundle through the trials and tribulations of settling in rural France with Beth, her adorably grumpy husband, Jack, and their two well-fed dogs, Sam and Biff. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rebecca H -- Another gem from Beth Haslam : Having read Beth Haslam’s previous two books and absolutely loving them I was greatly anticipating the next instalment of the French adventure. I was not disappointed as it is just wonderful. Having bought their dream property ‘Le Palizac’ (considerably different from their original plan) they discovered to their horror that far from needing no work done it required almost total renovation! What follows is a marvellously descriptive look at the trials and tribulations they endured endeavouring to make their new home habitable. Told in Beth’s engaging and warm conversational tone it completely captivates the reader. She has a very sharp and observational eye and such a vivid descriptive style which means I can actually visualise this cast of eccentric characters including the workmen they hire, neighbours and the folks at the Auberge. I have no idea how they manage to hire such a number of ‘artisans’ with eccentricities, from Bob the ‘carpenter’( who wasn’t) to Jean –Luc of the ‘nervous disposition’ As if that wasn’t enough, the property was infested with all kinds of creatures including a variety of insect life plus glis – glis (rodents!) who inhabited the loft space. Coping with this and effectively camping in one of the rooms in the property, Beth and Jack also set about exploring and checking out their land which is home to deer and wild boar. I’m enormously impressed with their determination to manage the land and forest and to improve the environment for the animals and where they can spend time observing them in their natural habitat. Originally this was to be a place to retire to but somehow I feel there will be no taking it easy here! Now I just need to wait on the next book for further ‘fun’ filled anecdotes of Le Palizac. I can’t wait. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 11, 2016 )
